PhD graduate Gayil Nalls will be presenting Human Flashmobs: An Evolutionary Construct at the upcoming conference of The Society for Social Neuroscience (S4SN) in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 11–12 October 2012. Nalls’ research explores a behavioural aspect of living North American Robins, large brown migratory thrushes, as they occupy a localised natural summer habitat, in order to better understand a dramatic and fast-evolving human behaviour known as flash mobbing.
Taey Kim, a SMARTlab PhD candidate and artist, is an invited speaker at the ‘Cultural Translation and East Asia: Film, Literature and Art’ conference at the University of Bangor, 7–8 September 2012. She will present a paper entitled ‘Live as if Untranslated: Ghostwriters and the Artistic Interstice’, on the panel of Art, Practice and Cinema, which she will chair.
Taey Kim, SMARTlab PhD Candidate and Artist-Researcher, is invited to present her work at the Conference ‘Displacement, Resistance, Representation: Culture and Power in Contexts of Migrancy’, at Queen Mary University of London on 29 June 2012. She will present her recent research work on ‘Displaced Sleepwalkers, focusing on Artistic Research’ in a panel discussion on ‘Gender, Representation and Resistance’.
Kosovo Pavilion at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia
For the first time, Kosovo will be honoured at the Venice Biennale, the world’s largest and most prestigious architectural event.
The country’s exhibit, the Kosovo Pavilion, created by Rama with his company 4M studios, will represent an emotional barometer related to streets and buildings.
Professor Lizbeth Goodman and Dr Jackie Morie (SMARTlab PhD graduate and Senior Researcher/Team Leader at the University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technology) will be presenting on the programme (see downloadable flyer) in Seattle, at the University of Washington, from 13 to 15 June. They will work with collaborators including Dr Crispin Thurlow of the University of Washington to lead interactive PhD lectures and working sessions, and will conduct informal pre-interviews for prospective students for the new Thematic PhD and the new MA in Creative Technology Innovation. Dr Morie will lead an interactive session on ‘Virtual Worlds for Learning’ Using Biosensor Input Data, as an example of the kinds of interactive media workshops that take place during the Dublin PhD seminars. Professor Goodman will introduce the SMARTlab, and will discuss the inter-disciplinary methodologies and practicalities for international students who will visit Dublin several times a year as part of the validated programme.
Further to Tara Baoth Mooney’s presentation on Sustainability in Fashion on 26 March 2012, Tara, SMARTlab’s SMARTfashion and Sustainable Fashion Manager/Artist in Residence, will be attending an international dissemination event to present the findings and experiences of the DelPHE project on Tuesday, 22 May 2012, at the British Council, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
