The 23rd Int’l Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia will be held October 30th – November 2nd 2017 in Ireland at University College Dublin, with Special Workshops and Cultural Tours on November 3rd – 5th in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

VSMM2017 will explore ground-breaking applications of new media, VR, sensing, and imaging in creative societies. Some 30 years after the dawn of VR, with a new boom in virtual devices, products and applications, it is an apt moment to look “Back to the Future” and examine the potentials and pitfalls of VR, AR and 3D technologies. With virtual and 3D technology entering health to tourism, games to manufacturing, and art to entertainment, deep issues and questions arise.

The Conference will bring together researchers and academics, creative industry professionals and technologists, futurists and students to explore where virtual and 3D technologies have been and are taking us. Experts in the arts and culture, heritage and museums, design and engineering, architecture and planning, health and inclusion, and computing and digital systems are invited to gather to present, discuss, debate and learn.

Levi Strauss wrote about music that it is: “the supreme mystery among the human sciences” (1964). The practices of composition also remain, at large, mysterious. I adopt in my research a technological stance to analyse composition as a task involving equipment and artefacts, in particular notations and representations. Many studies of cognition have shown that the use of representations impacts the cognitive process. The early stages of music composition often involve sketching on paper. These sketches range from informal drawing and diagrams to partial drafts of the composition. My PhD research aimed at understanding the role played by these sketches in music composition: what are the techniques and technologies, the concrete and individual actions involved in composition, and what role do they play in the shaping of a composition? I have designed and evaluated a computer program that provides similar functions to that of pen and paper. I will illustrate the findings of my thesis through a case study and a presentation of the software, the Music Sketcher.

Jean-Baptiste Thiebaut graduated in both music composition and computer science before starting a PhD with the Interaction, Media and Communication group at Queen Mary, University of London. He develops his own programs to compose music and to study composers practices. His research is inter-disciplinary, drawing on musicology, cognitive science and human-computer interaction. He is also active as an artist. Recent works include the sound design of the pilot of 365 (Zeina Abirached, 2009) for the French Television, the organisation of the event Augmented Instruments at the Luminaire, the installation The Giant Instrument, presented at the Shunt and The Dana Centre at the Science Museum, the installation Visual Sound at the ICA, and a performance based on the “sonification” of a portrait at the National Portrait Gallery. He composes and performs with the band pplato. He defended his PhD in 2009 and is currently a lecturer in the Interaction, Media and Communication group at Queen Mary, University of London.

This presentation will be based on an article to be published in the catalogue of the ‘Invideo‘ experimental video festival (in Milan) in November 2009. Since 1967 there have been a plethora of different terminologies to describe a film/video with multiple possibilities which is alterable by its audience/creator whilst it is being viewed. This talk will present some of these products as well as discussing whether there still is – or indeed ever was – such a discretely identifiable thing as an ‘interactive movie’.

Representations of diversity: Ritual + Monument

Kris Smith MFA is a lecturer in digital photomedia, and is co-ordinator of this discipline within the School of Drama, Fine Art and Music at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He has recently been based at SMARTlab researching art and health synergies with a focus on digital methods for self-expression.

He will be presenting previews of two video works currently in progress, and will briefly speak about the methods used to create and present them.

Cultural well-being: celebrating and embracing diversity:

Rituals and monuments are two fundamental ways of publicly bringing in to focus aspects of a culture in ways that attempt to be accessible to current and future generations. In the case of a repeated live event or ritual, as well as in the physically permanent sculptural or painted object, an ongoing interpretation of the event or object is often needed in order for its original meaning and context to be communicated to a new audience.

The works ‘Ritual’ and ‘Monument’ refer to representations of cultural diversity that are both excessive and controversial in their own way. Portraying and celebrating diversity can often bring into relief the challenges inherent in embracing cultural differences. The word ‘cultural’ in this instance is used in the broadest sense: it refers not only to ‘cross-cultural’, but also to ‘music culture’, ‘youth culture’ etc. In ‘Ritual’ the tension associated with the event is for me physically expressed in the materials that provide a backdrop for the photographs.

In ‘Monument’ sculptures are documented using time-lapse techniques, and therefore changing qualities of light and temporal aspects dominate the work presented. However the original precinct containing the subject matter that has been photographed attempts to portray as many aspects as possible of the diverse culture in which it is found.

In summary, the time-lapse animations are meditations on what it means to be a part of a constantly changing and diverse culture.
