Esther teaches and supervises students with a focus on games, Game Studies and online communities. Her work investigates the relationship between players and games, with a particular emphasis on MMORPG gaming communities. She also has an interest in gendered representations in games, role-playing and other narratives created by players, protest and grief play, and virtual fan communities. The Vice President of the Digital Games Research Association, she has spoken widely around the world. Esther is currently writing a book, entitled Online Communities, Social Narratives, and co-editing a collection entitled Game Love, which looks at the representation of love in games by players, designers, game narratives and communities.
