Dr Sher Doruff

Research Group Leader: Creative Praxis

Dr Sher Doruff has been leading the SMARTlab research group on Creative Praxis since she took her PhD from Central Saint Martins in 2004. She has been working in the visual and performance-based collaborative arts in a variety of capacities since the 1970s. She studied Fine Arts and was a practicing musician/composer and scenographer in Chicago and New York. From the late 1980s to 2000 her practice incorporated digital technologies in live art contexts.

She received her PhD from SMARTlab at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in 2006. She has been a teacher/mentor in the Amsterdam Master of Choreography Programme (AHK) since its inception in 2002. Currently she is a senior researcher at the Rietveld Academy of Art and Design and mentor in the Masters of Artistic Research programmes at the University of Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Fine Art in The Hague.

Her doctoral research and dissertation mapped collaborative, creative processes in networked performance practice. This inquiry continues to constructively develop as an onto-epistomology of the diagrammatic – an interdisciplinary practice of relational dynamics. She sits on the editorial board of Inflexions Journal of Research Creation, Fibreculture Journal, and RTRSRCH. She has published numerous papers in academic and artistic contexts.
