Professor Lizbeth GoodmanProfessor Lizbeth Goodman, Director
Professor Lizbeth Goodman joined UCD in 2010. She is also Founder and Director of the SMARTlab Digital Media Institute and the MAGIC Multimedia and Games Innovation Centre, Gamelab and PLAYroom. An active researcher and community technology advocate, she has published and presented widely. She was awarded a Microsoft Community Affairs Senior Research Fellowship for development of SMARTclubs for disadvantaged youth in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (2006–10). She received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service to Women and Children in 2003, and was shortlisted and commended for a Times Higher Award in 2007.  >>

HuwHuw Williams, CTO
Huw is SMARTlab’s CTO (Chief Technical Officer), and was also recently appointed to head IT initiatives for LOCOG, the London Organising Committee of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He has been with SMARTlab since its inception, offering 17 years of experience in leading innovations and broadcast/audience development. >>


DeverilDr Deveril, PhD co-convenor and Researcher
Deveril is an expert in leading, documenting and assessing movement and video-based projects, especially those in school environments or with teachers and young people (in mixed ability groups). His academic work has included investigating the use of hypertext techniques in the analysis of dance. His practical work has been across the areas of dance-on-screen (artistic and documentary); live and mediated performance; teaching and facilitating filmmaking; and a variety of youth projects. He is an independent filmmaker, who trained as a director and video-editor. Recent work has given him DVD-authoring expertise and high-definition experience. >>

YurgosDr Yurgos Politis, Research Project Manager/Researcher
Yurgos Politis completed a 4-year Physics degree at the University of Athens and qualified as a Physics teacher. He then did a Masters in Education and a PhD in Physics Education. He gained useful research experience and skills throughout his training. He has since gained teaching experience at both second and third level. He has worked at Schools of Physics and Education in UCD, NUI Galway, UCC and IT Tralee as a teaching and research assistant and postdoctoral researcher. >>

Dr Marisa Ronan
Dr Marisa Ronan is Co-founder and manager of Cultúr Lab and collaborates with SMARTlab on the supervision of graduate students. Marisa has over a decade of university programme delivery experience, lecturing at both graduate and postgraduate level with a proven track record in teaching, research, and innovation in senior, change-making roles.


StephenSteve Benton, Community Teaching and Technology Officer/SMARTlifelab Manager
In 2003 Stephen was awarded a BSc (Hons) in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics by University College Dublin. Since then Stephen has held numerous roles in industry, including Production Biochemist, Technical Trainer, Health and Safety Trainer, IT Trainer, Process Improvement Specialist and Application Specialist. >>

NicolaNicola Herbertson, Technology Developer – Virtual Worlds
Nicola Herbertson is the SMARTlab Technology Development Manager for Virtual Worlds. Working with a team of expert developers and coders, she brings her expertise of designing and creating virtual environments for specific user communities to the Learnovate, SMARTlifelab and Healthbook projects. After studying Mandarin Chinese & Law at London SOAS and working for a TEC, LSC and the FE sector in South London for 12 years, Nikki Herbertson set up to pursue her personal and professional interests in diversity and new technologies. >>

TaraTara Boath Mooney, Learning Animations Project – Creative Director
Tara Baoth Mooney is an artist and design practitioner combining technical competence with a broad range of social and interpersonal skills. Tara has been involved in the creative side of Children’s television for many years. Having trained and worked as a performer and composer for in New York at the Jim Henson Company. Tara worked with the Henson team on the innovative and Emmy award winning series ‘Bear in the big blue house’. >>

CelineCeline Llewellyn-Jones, Learning Technologist
Celine Llewellyn-Jones has worked as a Learning Technologist, Experience Designer and Trainer for over 10 years. She has an MA in Interactive Media, an MA in Fine Art and Art History, a PGCert in Research, and is an HEA certified teacher. >>


AnnaAnna Sophia Schenk, SMARTlab Web & Social Media Developer
Anna Sophia is SMARTlab’s Web & Social Media Developer. Born in Germany, Anna Sophia has spent the last ten years of her life in Europe, South East Asia and the Middle East, developing a strong interest in many issues related to arts, media, development and human rights. >>


Ricki Schoen, SMARTlab Research Administrator/Exec Assistant
Ricki has recently joined the SMARTlab team at University College Dublin as Executive Assistant/Graduate Research Administrator, after spending the last 12 years in the Dublin office of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD). The IICD was established by the Good Friday Agreement in 1997 to deal with the issue of paramilitary weapons; as part of her role with the Commission she was awarded an MBE in 2007. >>

Antony Fernandes
Antony recently completed his studies at the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (Neuchâtel) where he obtained a Bachelor in Business Administration, 2013. He has joined the SMARTlab team for five months from Feburary 2014 on an Erasmus Placement under the Marie Curie Leonardo Programme of the European Commission. >>


Emilie Bandera
Emilie has joined the SMARTlab team for five months from February 2014 on an Erasmus Placement under the Marie Curie Leonardo Programme of the European Commission. The Swiss Talent Foundation matched Emile to SMARTlab to conduct her Mediamatician internship for work experience, as part of her formation at the CPNV in Switzerland. >>
